Canceled Half-Century Strawberry Social Funds Scout Troop's Year
For 55 years, Boy Scout Troop 474 has held its Strawberry Social. The $5,000 it makes funds the troop for a year. They need our help.
GUILFORD, CT — There's a group of very disappointed boys that need our help.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of the annual Guilford Strawberry Social, hosted by Boy Scout Troop 474," the troop announced.
"In 55 years, rain or shine, the Strawberry Social has brought the town together to enjoy each other's company along with the wonderful food provided by The Marketplace and Bishop's Orchards," the troop wrote. "The Jazz bands from Adams Middle School and Guilford High School set a beautiful backdrop for the fellowship on the Guilford Green, drawing hundreds of attendees."

The cancellation is sad enough, but add this: the money the troop raises from the late springtime festival funds it for the year. It's a time honored event that draws a lot of folks and while it's among a long list of canceled or postponed events due to the concerns about further community spread of COVID-19, the troop is hoping residents will consider a donation to keep them afloat.
"As a Troop, we are greatly involved and also indebted to our community. We thank you for all your support in the past for not only making the Strawberry Social an enjoyable event, but for allowing these young Scouts the means to participate in a program which will develop them into strong leaders in the communities in which they live and with skills necessary to help and serve others," the troop wrote on a GoFundMe campaign.
