Coronavirus: Guilford Gives Taxpayers 3 Months Deferment
The Board of Selectmen approved a tax deferment program for taxpayers for the period March 10 through and including July 1.

GUILFORD, CT — The Board of Selectmen, by unanimous vote, have authorized a tax deferment program for taxpayers for the period March 10, 2020 through and including July 1, 2020. The measure was undertaken in response to an executive order by Gov. Ned Lamont.
This Deferment Program offers taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits and residents a ninety (90) day deferment on real property, personal property or motor vehicles assessments from the time it became due and payable, without accruing interest. In essence, taxes due on July 1, 2020 will now be due on or before October 1, 2020.
“We thank the Governor for giving municipalities the opportunity to provide financial relief to those community members who are dramatically impacted by the pandemic," said First Selectman Matt Hoey. "It is my expectation that a significant number of our residents, not adversely impacted by this crisis, will be able and willing to pay their taxes on time. We urge those residents do so in order to protect the ability of those less fortunate to take advantage of the extension thereby diminishing the impact on the town’s cash flow and financial health."

Landlords, in order to prove eligibility, must provide documentation to the municipality that the parcel has or will suffer a significant income decline or that commensurate forbearance was offered to their tenants or lessees. Landlords must submit their applications to the Tax Collector by July 1, 2020. The application is currently under development and will be available on the town website once developed and approved by the State Office of Policy Management.
