Coronavirus: Guilford To Open Recreation Facilities Immediately

GUILFORD, CT — First Selectman Matt Hoey announced the immediate opening of some of the town’s recreational facilities, including the high school track, tennis courts, golf course and playing fields.

As of Thursday, Guilford had 80 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, three more than the previous night, and two people have died, the state health department reported.

Hoey said on Facebook that since the majority of the new COVID-19 cases in town are of those in nursing homes. He said that social distancing efforts have helped keep the transmission rate low. He said "after careful consideration" and talks with health and parks officials it was decided that recreation facilities would again be open to the public.

The list of facilities being opened as well as the guidelines that must be followed by residents are in the attached emergency order and available on the town website and Facebook page, Hoey said, noting all the facilities will be open from sunrise to sunset.

Hoey said residents should to adhere to the guidelines and maintain proper social distancing and said that some town employees "will be visible at the various areas to act as monitors, ensuring that people comply with appropriate social distancing and wearing masks."

If people are not complying, the monitors will call the Guilford Police Department and said "Those not doing so may be subject to enforcement action."

"This will give residents the opportunity to enjoy some beneficial outdoor exercise as the weather improves," Hoey said. "We just please ask that they cooperate with social distancing so everyone can enjoy these facilities in the safest way possible."
