Disabled Vessel Rescued By Guilford Firefighters, Marine Units: FD

GUILFORD, CT — A disabled vessel off Vineyard Point on Long Island Sound was rescued Sunday by the Guilford Fire Department and marine units, the fire department said in a news release.

The anchor of a fishing vessel became entangled around its propeller, "creating an immediate danger due to rough sea conditions," the GFD said.

"Guilford Professional Firefighters utilized specialised tools, including a knife attached to a boat hook, to swiftly free the line from the prop," the GFD added. "After ensuring the vessel was safe, they escorted it back to the safety of Guilford Town Marina's boat launch."

The GFD used the incident to remind fishermen of important safety reminders:

Stay weather aware: conditions can change rapidly, especially during blackfish season.

Anchor safely: Avoid anchoring off your stern with you rback to the sea to prevent swamping.

Position your vessel: Always try to keep your bow into the waves when anchored.

"We urge all fishermen to remain vigialnt and take necessary precautions. Your safety is our priority!" the GFD added.
