The flu is more than just a few sniffles and a fever. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from flu every year. Older adults, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at the highest risks for serious flu complications. The only way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get vaccinated every year.

“We have an adequate supply of flu and pneumonia vaccines this year and have more than 65 clinics scheduled from Hamden to Old Saybrook,” reports Kathy Hand, RN Supervisor of Health Promotion programs at VNA Community Healthcare. The flu virus usually reaches peak levels in January to February, so it is advised that people get vaccinated in the fall to give the vaccine enough time to work when they need it most.

Kathy adds, “this year we want people to know that it matters to your community where you get your flu shot. As a non-profit organization, VNA Community Healthcare relies heavily on their flu prevention program. Kathy adds, “every dollar we collect from this program is reinvested back into our communities, enabling us to provide additional free or low cost health screenings, wellness programs and family caregiver support.”
