A great white shark has never been tracked before into Long Island Sound, and this occurred in late September, officials say.

GUILFORD, CT — A great white shark was tracked as being located in the central Sound off Guilford for the first time ever late last month, according to The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

In a Facebook post, the aquarium said, "Montauk the Great White shark has been spotted in Long Island Sound! According to OCEARCH's shark tracker, a Great White never been tracked into Long Island Sound."

"She was pinged in the central Sound off Guilford on Friday night (Sept. 23)," the aquarium continued.

Montauk is a 4.6-foot female shark who weighs about 50 pounds and is the first white shark tagged during Expedition NY 2016, the Guilford Courier reports. Montauk was born this year.

Aquarium publicist Dave Sigworth told the Guilford Courier that sharks are outfitted with a tag by OCEARCH which allows them to track the sharks once the "tag breaks the surface of the water," which doesn't happen often.
