Guilford Couple Rescued: Black Ice Had Their Car Hanging On Ledge

GUILFORD, CT — For more than 40 years, Corinne and Richard Mulqueen have been happy to call Guilford home. But never more so than when the couple's car, having slid on black ice, hung off a ledge, trapped between two trees.

A good Samaritan, caring cop and guys from Guilford Texaco came to their rescue.

Corrine tells the story on a post on the Simply Guilford community Facebook page:

"A shoutout to a passerby named Peter Schioppo who stopped to offer assistance after my husband and I skidded on black ice, lost control of our vehicle and landed between two massive trees with the passenger side of the car hanging off a ledge. This kind man stayed with us until the police came to assist. He was amazing with his calm and comforting demeanor.

Lt. Jeffrey Provencher arrived shortly after and after assessing the situation suggested he help us get out of the car. We were ambivalent as we were unsure if any movement within the car would flip it. Lt. Provencher cautiously helped stabilize our movements and with his help we successfully exited our SUV. He waited until Guilford Texaco showed up, our daughter and SIL arrived, he drove us back to our home and stayed the couple of hours it took for Guilford Texaco to recover the car from the ledge and the trees. Thank you to both Dylan and Ernie from Texaco who our daughter said were wonderful.

We feel tremendous gratitude for LT. Provencher who was a source of caring, competence and professionalism throughout our ordeal.

Guilford is a remarkable community and our GPD is much if the fabric that makes this possible. We have lived in Guilford for 42 years and have had only positive experiences in our wonderful town.
