GUILFORD, CT — The Guilford Fire Department is warning residents about a "concerning and dangerous" trend circulating on TikTok and other social platforms that involves students inserting pencil lead or other metal objects into the USB or charging ports of their school-issued laptops or personal electronic devices.

The result is often a short circuit that causes sparks, smoke or even fire, according to fire officials.

In recent cases across the state, the trend has caused school evacuations, damaged property and health and safety concerns.

"In some incidents, the internal battery has experienced thermal runaway, a chain reaction that can lead to toxic smoke, flames, and explosion. These situations not only put students and teachers in danger but also tie up emergency resources that may be needed elsewhere," the GFD said in a Facebook post Thursday. "While it may appear to some as a harmless online trend, this challenge is no joke. It’s a real fire hazard, and intentionally damaging electronics in this way can lead to criminal charges, serious injuries, and long-term consequences."

The GFD issued the following safety tips:

  • Talk to your children about this challenge and the dangers it presents
  • Encourage them to report any classmates involved in these activities
  • Monitor their online activity and help them recognize that online “clout” is never worth risking lives

"Please help us keep our community safe by staying informed and having conversations at home. The Guilford Fire Department remains committed to protecting all residents, but we need your help to prevent these types of emergencies before they happen," the GFD added.
