An alert Good Samaritan is the likely reason why two Huskies are alive right now.

A man was driving near Mill Pond around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when he heard a loud pitched scream. He pulled over, ran to the pond, and saw two dogs submerged in the water with their paws and head held above the ice, said Steve Lapaglia, a Guilford firefighter.

The Good Samaritan tried to rescue the dogs himself, noticed he couldn’t, and called the Guilford Fire Department, which was fortunately located right down the road.

A team of eight firefighters responded and David Lindgren, who was dressed in his cold water submission suit, was able to rescue both dogs, Lapaglia said.

He said both Huskies are fortunate someone heard them as they were hidden behind a house.

Both dogs are doing very well and are at the Guilford Veterinarian. The water temperature was in the 30s and Lapaglia said the firefighters train for situations such as this one.

Firefighters say the dogs owner has been located.

Guilford firefighters are urging residents to stay off of the ice.
