Guilford Funeral Home Contributes To Grass Island Shack Restoration

First Selectman Matt Hoey received a surprise visitor in his office last week.

GUILFORD, CT — Guilford Funeral Home stepped up last week and offered support for the restoration of the Grass Island red shack, which was recently damaged by a storm.

First Selectman Matt Hoey posted a photo on Facebook of himself with funeral home president and CEO George Sullivan, who presented a check worth $2,500 on April 19.

"A surprise visitor appeared at the Selectmen’s office this afternoon, George Sullivan from the Guilford Funeral Home who wanted to be the first to contribute to efforts to restore the Grass Island Shack," Hoey said in his post. "I was surprised by the visit but not the gesture. Thank you, George, and the Sullivan family!"

"Wonderful man, great family, beautiful gesture! Thank you George for your generosity and Matt for your support of a project that means so much to your constituents," said another.

The iconic shack was damaged on April 11.

Officials have been exploring how to best move the building to higher ground until a new foundation can be built. On April 18, Hoey said the shack could be moved this week.

It's unclear how much the work will cost.
