Guilford Residents Invited to Tour Town's First Environmentally Friendly Home

The environmentally friendly Passive Home overlooks the Long Island Sound.

Celebration Contracting has built Guilford’s first Passive House overlooking the Long Island Sound, the New Haven Register reports.

The company will be hosting tours of the home on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours will also be given on Nov. 2 from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets for the tour will be $10 at the door and $8 at Bishop’s Orchard. Ticket sales support Camp Courant and the Greenway Trail.

Joseph Sarfaty, project manager of Guilford’s second Zero Energy Passive House told the paper the cost of a Passive House is 5 or 10 percent more than what someone would pay for standard construction. The house overlooking the Long Island Sound features rooftop solar panels, super-insulation, high performance windows and doors and a fresh air ventilation system and provides a 90 percent reduction in the heating and cooling required in most houses.

According to the paper, the tour is meant to show residents that an environmentally friendly home doesn’t have to be strange looking.

Residents wishing to tour the house should park at the Thornwood Complex on Oct. 31 and at Breakfast Woodworks on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. A complimentary shuttle service will transport residents to the home.
