Guilford Youth Feminist Alliance Presents The Period Project

A group of high school feminists putting together a menstrual drive for local homeless and domestic violence centers.

Hello! Nice to meet you! We are the Guilford Youth Feminist Alliance, a brand new organization that is completely youth led and run. As the name suggests, we are a group of young feminists in Guilford, CT. The group was formed back in January to respond to the growing concern among the student population surrounding the new presidential administration, and the effect that it would have on marginalized groups across the state and country. Many of us were frustrated at the lack of meaningful dialogue surrounding important issues in our community, so when our school decided not to let us create a "feminist club" at Guilford High School, we decided to go ahead and create our own group anyways. After getting together and discussing some of the issues that were important to us as students and members of the Guilford community, issues such as reproductive rights, access to healthcare, and sexual violence were at the forefront of many of our minds. And thus, the Guilford Youth Feminist Alliance was born.

For our first project as an organization, we wanted to be able to do something that would have a direct impact on the local community, but could be done with limited resources. So when one of our group members suggested doing a donation drive, we immediately knew that it was perfect. We floated the idea of collecting menstrual products, and after contacting several local shelters, it was obvious that there was a need to pads and tampons in these places. After weeks of organizing, calling, and planning, the details of the drive are now out. It would means so much to us for all of you to support!

Proceeds from the drive will benefit the following places: The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services - a domestic violence organization based out of North Haven that has several emergency shelters for victims in New Haven County; and South Park Inn, a homeless shelter in downtown Hartford.
