GUILFORD, CT — HeatSmart Guilford, an energy education and outreach program, announced that more than 125 individual homeowners have already signed up for low-cost home energy audits through the program.

The town partnered with Peoples Action for Clean Energy and launched the initiative in summer 2021 to encourage both the audits and the adoption of low emission, heat pump systems to heat and cool homes.

During the audits, pre-selected Home Energy Solutions contractors and heat pump specialists evaluate the energy efficiency of the home and may provide hundreds of dollars of energy and money saving improvements.

Energy costs are rising throughout the country, and Connecticut consumers will feel that directly, including prices for natural gas, oil and residential propane used for heat and gasoline for the car. Electricity that runs off any of them will also cost more.

Eversource, a local electric utility, is changing its “supply rate” from approximately 7 cents to 11.5 cents, an increase of over 60%. This will result in a typical home’s electricity bill increasing 20% or more in 2022.

For every energy audit that Guilford residents pursue during this initiative, HeatSmart energy solutions partners will contribute $25 to ongoing energy education and outreach in Guilford.
