Man Thanks Guilford Firefighters For Saving His Life During Medical Event
Guilford firefighters responded to a report of a cardiac arrest at a local gym in November 2024.

GUILFORD, CT — The Guilford Fire Department announced on Tuesday that the man who collapsed at a local gym last November has made a full recovery, and he recently stopped by the firehouse to thank the firefighters who helped save his life.

On Nov. 19, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Guilford firefighters responded to a report of a cardiac arrest at Planet Fitness in Guilford, the GFD said.

A gymgoer collapsed while working out, the GFD said, noting that "quick-thinking bystanders" immediately began CPR and used an AED that was on-site to successfully deliver a shock before emergency responders arrived.
Arriving firefighters took over patient care and provided advanced life support, the GFD said. The patient was then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for further treatment.

"This incident is a powerful reminder of how early CPR and access to an AED can make all the difference," the GFD saidWe commend the bystanders who took immediate action and are grateful for the outcome.
Firefighters and Planet Fitness members and employees were recognized during an award ceremony in February for their efforts during the November incident, but also in another medical call at the gym in January of this year.
