Obituary: Douglas (“Doug”) Millette, 66, of Guilford

The Guilford High School grad was a highly-decorated Marine, who, by the time he retired in 2001, had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.

Douglas (“Doug”) Millette, 66, of Guilford, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Soon after graduating from Guilford High School in 1973, he followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Emerging from boot camp at Parris Island as Honor Man of his platoon, he graduated as a PFC, and began his 27-year career. His awards include Good Conduct 8th award, Sea Service Deployment 3rd award, Certificate of Commendation 2nd award, five letters of Appreciation, Navy Achievement Medal 3rd award, Joint Meritorious Unit award, Meritorious Unit Commendation 4rd award, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal 2nd award.

By the time he retired in 2001, he had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant, after duty stations in Hawaii, California, Connecticut, Virginia, and Okinawa.

After retiring, he started a painting business, in which he worked until 2018.

In 2019, he returned to his hometown of Guilford, where he spent many hours with good friends. He lived life on his own terms, and kept up with many good friends across the country. He’ll be missed by old, dear friends from high school, the Marine Corps, and the many people with whom he crossed paths through the years.

Doug leaves his beloved daughters, Sydney Fulgencio-Millette (Hannah) of Dumfries, VA, Cassidy Millette of Kingman, Arizona, wife Debby Millette, grandchildren Roman Millette and Scarlett Millette, mother, Nancy Millette,of Guilford, CT, uncle Burt D. Millette (Joan), of Cary, NC, sister Sue Dephouse (Jan), of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, sister Pat Leete (Larry), Guilford, CT, sister Barb Notte (Nick), Palm City, FL, brother Dave (Tracy), Wendell, NC, seven nieces and nephews, and three great-nieces, and a great-nephew. He was predeceased by his father, Douglas W. Millette.

Interment will take place at Marine Corps Base Quantico, in Quantico, VA at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at a place to be determined.
