Obituary: Leroy Packer, 98, longtime Guilford resident

A WWII Army sergeant in the Pacific theater, Columbia University​ grad and outstanding electrical engineer, most of all, he was a good man.

Leroy Packer died peacefully on July 15th at the age of 98. Roy, a longtime resident of Guilford, was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty, and is survived by his children, Dr. Susan Packer and Dr. David Packer, his daughter-in-law Tara Packer, and devoted friend and companion on his final journey, Barbara Knapp.

Roy was born on December 4, 1923 in New York City, where he spent his childhood years. He enlisted in the US Army as a Tech Sergeant in 1942, fighting in the Pacific theater. After the war, he graduated from Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, becoming an outstanding electrical engineer spanning the analog and digital ages.

Roy was a doer who lived life on his terms. He was the kind of man who made America truly great, and engendered the admiration and respect of all who knew him. Most of all, he was a good man who will be greatly missed by family and friends.
