P&Z Commission Seeks Resident Input On Zoning Regulations Rewrite

GUILFORD, CT — Both the Planning and Zoning commission and department are working on a "comprehensive re-write" of Guilford's zoning regulations. What they need is input, thoughts, and feedback from the community. This will happen in informational public meetings and feedback sessions about topic areas within the proposed regulations.

"Simply put, zoning is how the town directs and regulates activities on private property," a message from Town Planner Jaime Stein reads. "Zoning is the tool by which we implement the town’s plans, whether it be the Comprehensive Plan of Conservation and Development, the Affordable Housing Plan or the initiatives of our many wonderful volunteer task forces."

And, given a re-write of Zoning Regulations is not a common occurrence," the commission and department are reaching out and facilitating a series of public discussions "with the aim of completing the re-write successfully and transparently."

Stein and the P&Z Commission hope to "continue to engage interested members" of the community.

The Zoom-only sessions began July 28 and will continue through the end of the year. Each session will have a focus area and is designed to offer an opportunity to review and comment on a specific section of the regulations. Focus areas include affordable housing, business districts along Route 1, farming and agriculture and sustainability.

"Please engage with us often to ensure that your feedback is heard and incorporated," Stein wrote.

The new regulations are still in draft form and will be codified by a public hearing process and vote of the Planning & Zoning Commission in January 2023.
