Scanlon Reappointed To Committee Chair Post

From CT Reps: Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz announced Wednesday that he will reappoint Rep. Sean Scanlon (D-Guilford) to another term as House chairman of the legislature’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee when the 2019 session of the Connecticut General Assembly begins Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Scanlon, who will be sworn into his third term representing Guilford and Branford one week from today, was first appointed Insurance and Real Estate committee chairman in January 2017. At the time, he was the first second-term legislator to be named a committee chairman – usually a position reserved for legislators with seniority – in nearly two decades.

“Serving as chairman of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee has been a great honor and I’m very grateful to Speaker Aresimowicz for giving me the chance to serve as chair for another term,” Scanlon said. “I'm really proud of what we’ve accomplished these last two years on behalf of Connecticut consumers. We created Connecticut’s first prescription drug price transparency law, expanded women’s health care and wrote the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Essential Health Benefits into state law so that no matter what happens in Washington, people won’t lose coverage because of things like pre-existing conditions or mental health.”

In addition to working on health care-related issues, Scanlon said he was also proud of writing and passing Connecticut’s first law to protect the safety of Uber and Lyft passengers by requiring comprehensive background checks, vehicle inspections and insurance standards.

During the 2017-2019 term, Scanlon served on three committees: Insurance and Real Estate, Public Health and Transportation. In the next term, Speaker Aresimowicz reappointed Scanlon to Public Health and, for the first time, appointed him to the Finance, Revenue and Bonding committee. The powerful committee, which Scanlon's predecessor former Rep. Pat Widlitz once chaired, handles the tax side of the state budget.
