GUILFORD, CT — The Town of Guilford says it has seen "significant waste reduction" at the Guilford Madison Transfer Station as a result of the implementation of the new pay-as-you-throw system.

Guilford moved from a weight-based system, where residents paid $9 per 100 pounds of trash, to a per-bag system using town-designated blue bags. The change has led to a 36 percent reduction in trash processed at the transfer station, the town said in a news release.

Additionally, recycling has increased by 16 percent, and participation in the town's free food scrap drop-off program has more than doubled, the town said.

"The numbers speak for themselves," said First Selectman Matt Hoey in a news release. "By making waste disposal a more conscious decision, we’re seeing a significant reduction in trash, more materials being recycled, and greater participation in food scrap collection. This is a win-win for our community and the environment."

Hoey thanked those involved with the program.
