GUILFORD, CT — State Sen. Christine Cohen (D-12) of Guilford announced last week she has met the qualifying thresholds for the Citizen's Election Program (CEP), enabling her to run for re-election.

A small business owner, Cohen and her husband Rob run a small business, Cohen’s Bagel Company, which has been growing for over 20 years on the Boston Post Road in Madison.

"We are in a critical moment when it comes to the issues I hear about most from my constituents - climate change, reproductive access and fiscal security," Cohen said in a news release. "The past five years have been the honor of a lifetime and I am so proud of all the work we have accomplished in these areas and beyond - but there is much work to do. I’m asking residents of the 12th district to send me back to Hartford so that we may continue the progress we have made. Thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility of being your voice in Hartford and I look forward to the journey ahead."

State Comptroller and Guilford resident Sean Scanlon praised Cohen and her record since coming into office in 2019.

"From the day she stepped foot in the Capitol, Christine has been one of the most respected voices in Hartford on everything from small businesses to health care to the environment. At a time when politics is gridlocked and divisive, she has spent five years reaching across the aisle, building consensus and getting big stuff done for Connecticut," Scanlon said in a news release. "In her district, I’ve seen firsthand how hard she works for her constituents and to ensure our communities get the resources they deserve from state government. I’m proud to call her both a friend and my state senator, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting her in this important election."

Madison First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons also spoke highly of Cohen, noting she helped the town secure over $7.5 million in state grants, including $4 million for the Academy Community Center.

"Sen. Cohen has also proven herself to be a strong and passionate voice in developing policies to protect our beautiful shoreline while also balancing new ideas with sound pragmatism. Madison is lucky to have her represent us in Hartford and I look forward to continuing the collaboration," Lyons said.

"I’m excited to see Christine Cohen run for another term in the Senate. It is not often that we get people who campaign on issues and then actually follow through on those issues once they are elected," added Branford Selectman Ray Dunbar. "Christine works with members from both sides of the aisle in the citizens' best interest."

The election is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 5.
