Women & Family Life Center Hosts Men Who Cook Gala to Support Women Affected by Domestic Violence and Other Crises
W&FLC will support women facing challenges and crises at its 21st annual Men Who Cook Gala - 10/4/15 at the Guilford Yacht Club.
Women & Family Life Center will raise funds to support women facing challenges and crises, including domestic violence, at its 21st annual Men Who Cook Gala on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at the Guilford Yacht Club in Guilford, Connecticut.
Men Who Cook occurs during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As President Barack Obama proclaimed in 2014, each year in October “we acknowledge the progress made in reducing these shameful crimes, embrace the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse, and recognize that more work remains until every individual is able to live free from fear.”
Women & Family Life Center’s Men Who Cook Gala will both raise awareness about the impact of domestic violence in towns along the Connecticut Shoreline and will raise funds to support women served by the Center, including those experiencing domestic violence. “It is especially meaningful to us to host Men Who Cook during Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said the Center’s Executive Director, Peggy Britt. “Domestic violence affects members of our community every day. Through Men Who Cook, we can help people become more aware of the prevalence of domestic violence, and we can raise necessary funds to help women living in fear.”

The gala provides men in particular with a tangible way to support the women the Center serves: the three-course dinner served at the event is prepared by men who have volunteered as chefs. The chefs engage in friendly competitions for the best dishes, as voted on by the guests. Throughout the evening, guests may bid on silent and live auction items, including vacation getaways, a food truck party, and a dinner party with a professional chef.
Along with the delicious food, the gala—sponsored by Gourmet Galley Catering, the Guilford Yacht Club, Karen Pritzker & Michael Vlock, and Slocum & Sons—will feature popular television and radio personality Neil Fuentes, aka “The Singing Chef,” as emcee, and Eric Hummel, from the world-famous Hummel Bros., as the auctioneer. Karen Stephens, a Broker of Page Taft-Christie’s International Real Estate and a former Chair of the Board of the Directors at the Center, will be honored for her contributions to the organization.
