New Details Released Concerning Triple Fatal Hamden Accident

BREAKING: Police released new details about the accident Sunday afternoon.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police released new details concerning the accident that claimed the lives of three people in an early morning accident on Whitney Avenue near the Route 40 Connector. Three young adults, a Monroe resident and two Bridgeport residents were killed after an SUV crashed into a tree, police said.

At 2:26 a.m. police responded to the accident scene. Hamden Fire Rescue personnel arrived immediately thereafter and rendered medical assistance to the three occupants, police said. A Hamden Fire Department Paramedic subsequently pronounced them dead at the scene, police said.

They have been identified as a 21 year-old Monroe resident, 26 year-old Bridgeport resident and a 29 year-old Bridgeport resident. Two of the occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said. Their bodies have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies. The names of the three deceased has not yet been released.

"A preliminary investigation has revealed that the vehicle was exiting the Route 40 Connector at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed 4 lanes of Whitney Avenue before striking a tree," said Police Capt. Ronald Smith.

The Hamden Police Department Traffic Division is conducting the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Kevin Hall at (203) 230-4036.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police say Route 40 has reopened but Whitney Avenue remains closed between Ives and Route 40 Sunday due to a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred early Sunday.

Police have not released any other details but WTNH News 8 reports that an SUV struck a tree in the area of Whitney Avenue and Route 40 at 2:30 a.m. Sunday and all three people inside the vehicle are dead.

The names of the victims have not yet been released. The accident is under investigation.
