Abandoned Dog With Severe Medical Issues Improving: Hamden Police
The dog was found to be suffering from severe medical issues and needed to have both ears partially amputated, according to police.
HAMDEN, CT — An abandoned dog who was found last month tied to an apartment building and was suffering from severe medical issues has “improved considerably,” according to Hamden Police Capt. Ronald Smith.
The dog, a Yorkshire Terrier Mix, was suffering from a severe case of “epidermal necrosis,” a skin condition that damages the skin, according to Smith. The condition has been corrected by surgery and the use of antibiotics, Smith said.
When the dog was found in the 600 block of Mix Avenue, both of its ears were infected and needed to be partially amputated. The dog was also underweight and dehydrated and had been suffering from the condition for at least two weeks, a veterinarian at the North Haven Animal Hospital told police. The dog is about 3 years old.

“The dog’s overall clinical evaluation has improved, as well as his appetite and disposition,” Smith said in an email on Tuesday. “A portion of his fur has grown back. The Hamden Animal Control Division is hopeful that the dog will be ready for adoption in a few weeks.
“The Hamden Police Department and Hamden Animal Control Division would once again like to thank ‘Running for Rescues’ and the vast number of concerned citizens who assisted in the dog’s recovery.”
