Alice Peck School to Undergo Extensive Renovations

Hamden recently received a state grant to fund the project.

The Hamden Legislative Council recently approved a resolution authorizing the Hamden Board of Education to file an application for grant funding from the State of Connecticut for the renovation of Alice Peck School.

The grant allocation will focus on the transformation of Alice Peck School via specific renovations into a specialized Early Learning, Special Education, and Pre-School Center.

The total cost of the project is $2.5 million.

Hamden received the funding due to the efforts of its state legislative delegation, according to Mayor Curt Balzano Leng.

“I thank our Hamden legislative delegation for working to secure these grant funds which will enhance our educational offerings and improve a town facility used by many students,” Leng said in a statement.

Planned renovations to Alice Peck School include infrastructure improvements such as: boiler replacement, roof replacement, and hazardous material abatement in the building tunnels. Additionally, several pre-K program improvements will be implemented.

“These improvements are absolutely necessary to ensure that Alice Peck School remains operational and structurally sound,” Mark Albanese, Director of Facilities for the Board of Education, said. “The current boiler system dates back to the 1950s, the current roof has far outlived its practical lifespan, and various rooms throughout the building are in need of updated restroom facilities, age appropriate furniture, and new media and educational technologies.

“The state has funded 100 percent of the cost of these renovations thanks to the sincere efforts of Hamden’s state delegates.”

The School Building Committee will continue to meet regularly as the projected infrastructure improvements move forward with construction. The expected completion date for this project falls within the 2015-2016 school year.
