HAMDEN, CT — A man was arrested Friday after police said he was impersonating a FedEx delivery driver while selling “high-quality counterfeit merchandise” in Hamden.
Police responded on April 24 to a report of suspicious activity, according to Det. Hailey Zarzuela.
Zarzuela said Gioacchino Esposito was taken into custody and arrested following an investigation by Hamden patrol officers and detectives.
During the investigation, Zarzuela said officers seized approximately $30,000 worth of counterfeit merchandise, along with nearly $900 in cash.
Esposito was charged with forgery of a trademark or label, criminal impersonation, and criminal attempt to commit first-degree larceny. He was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
“The Hamden Police Department reminds the community that counterfeit goods sold through illicit markets can pose significant safety risks,” Zarzuela wrote in a news release. “These products are often manufactured without proper safety standards and have been associated with hazards such as overheating, fires, and electrical burns. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.”
Chief E.P. Reynolds commended the officers involved.
“This case highlights the diligence and proactive efforts of our patrol officers and detectives,” Reynolds said. “Their attention to detail and commitment to protecting our community were instrumental in identifying this scheme and preventing potentially dangerous counterfeit products from reaching the public.”
