“Sadly, one family pet died in the fire from smoke inhalation,” officials wrote in a post on the Hamden Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Crews responded at 8:45 a.m. to a report of a structure fire on Grandview Avenue.

“Rescue 2 arrived on scene to a heavy smoke condition and zero visibility,” officials wrote. “They were able to contain a fire in the basement with an extinguisher before Engine 2 arrived and extinguished the remaining fire. The fire was contained to the basement but the house suffered extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the home. One occupant was transported to the hospital by AMR for evaluation.”

The American Red Cross responded to the scene and provided assistance to the family, according to officials.

The Cheshire, New Haven and North Haven fire departments provided station coverage during the fire.

“The Hamden Fire Marshal Office stated that the fire started on a flat top grill,” officials wrote. “An occupant tried to extinguish the blaze but the fire spread rapidly and the occupants had to vacate the home and call 911.”
