HAMDEN, CT — Two people were hospitalized after a fire Tuesday night in Hamden, according to officials.
Crews responded around 9:30 p.m. to a report of a fire on Winnett Street.
“Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire and smoke on the first and second floors,” officials wrote in a post on the Hamden Fire Department’s Facebook page. “An aggressive fire attack was able to quickly extinguish the fire on the first floor. The older style house had balloon frame construction. Before HFD's arrival the fire had followed a chase in the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor and attic via the chase that lacked fire stops.
“An occupant was alerted to the fire by an activated smoke detector. He was able to alert two other family members and safely evacuate the building.”
Two residents were taken to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and observation, according to officials. They are expected to make a full recovery, officials.
“No firefighters were injured at the fire,” officials wrote. “Cheshire, New Haven, and North Haven Fire Departments offered mutual aid at the fire as well as station coverage.
“The Fire Marshal Office has determined that the fire started in a den on the first floor. The investigation to the exact cause is ongoing.”
