HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Police Department is mourning the death of retired Police Officer Christopher Sheppard, who died June 27 at the age of 42.
Sheppard retired from the Hamden Police Department last year and also served as a U.S. Marine.
“He leaves behind a legacy defined by courage, compassion, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his community,” according to his obituary.
Sheppard was born in Flushing, New York, and graduated from East Haven High School in 2001. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine from 2009-2013 where he “exemplified honor, discipline, and selfless commitment,” according to his obituary.
“Following his military service, he continued his life’s calling as a Hamden Police officer, faithfully protecting and serving his community from 2014-2025,” the obituary reads. “Christopher viewed his profession not simply as a job, but as a duty.
“While he was respected for his strength and professionalism, those who knew him best will remember his infectious sense of humor. He had a remarkable ability to make others laugh and bring people together. His laughter was genuine, his smile welcoming, and his quick wit contagious.”
Sheppard was also described as a “deeply caring man” in the obituary.
“He was rough and tough on the outside and gentle on the inside,” the obituary reads. “Whether offering a listening ear, lending a helping hand, or quietly supporting someone in need, he gave of himself without hesitation. His kindness extended far beyond his family, touching the lives of friends, colleagues, neighbors, and countless members of the community.”
In announcing Sheppard’s death, the Hamden Police Department wrote in a post on Facebook that it extends its “deepest condolences to Officer Sheppard’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.”
“Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time,” the post reads. “Rest easy, Officer Sheppard. Your service and legacy will always be remembered.”
