HAMDEN, CT — Officials are reminding residents that a public informational meeting for Route 15 Exit 51 improvements will be held in September in Hamden.
The meeting regarding the Route 15 Interchange 51 (old Exit 61) Improvements in Hamden and North Haven will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Hamden Government Center, 3rd Floor Conference Room, at 2750 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden. The meeting facility is ADA accessible.
An open forum for individual discussions with CTDOT officials will begin at 6 p.m., and the formal presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. The meeting "aims to inform the community about the proposed project, gather feedback, and answer any questions," according to officials.
"The purpose of this project is to improve safety at the Route 15 interchange 51 ramps and improve mobility for all roadway users along Whitney Avenue," according to the DOT. "This project is needed because of the high number of front-to-rear crashes at this interchange due to the stop-controlled on-ramps. On Whitney Avenue, additional pedestrian facilities are planned to improve safety.
"Proposed improvements on Route 15 include the removal of stop controls and the addition of acceleration and deceleration lanes, as well as the addition of signals and pedestrian crossings at the ramp intersections and the addition of sidewalks on Whitney Avenue.
"Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements will include a partial sliver acquisition to accommodate a turn lane and sidewalk reconstruction. Temporary easements and rights to grade are also anticipated for sidewalk construction, retaining wall modifications, and guiderail installation."
Construction is expected to begin spring 2028 subject to availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permits. The estimated construction cost for the project is approximately $28 million, according to officials. The project is expected to be undertaken with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.
