HAMDEN, CT — Dawn M. Savo has been appointed as Hamden's new Director of Finance, Mayor Adam Sendroff announced.
Savo's appointment was approved by the Legislative Council on Monday night. The position had been vacant in a permanent capacity for more than two years. Myron Hul served in the role on an interim basis for the past six months.
Savo brings more than 30 years of municipal finance experience to Hamden. Before serving as the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for the Town of Wilton, she served as the finance director in Stratford for five years, following her tenure as Stratford's assistant finance director.
"I am thrilled that Dawn Savo will be joining my administration as Finance Director," Sendroff said in a news release. "Dawn's experience and expertise are an excellent fit for Hamden, as we continue the work to improve Hamden's fiscal trajectory. I look forward to working with Dawn on completing the outstanding audits, and reforming the procedures and controls in our Finance Department to ensure we do not find ourselves in the same position again. Over a year ago I started networking to find a Finance Director, and that's when I met Dawn. I'm thankful that we stayed in touch and she has decided to come to Hamden to make a difference.
"I'm very grateful to Myron Hul for his dedicated work as Interim Finance Director, who will be staying on for a transitional period. Thank you as well to the Legislative Council for their support and unanimously approving this appointment."
Savo previously served as Assistant Finance Director/Risk Manager for the Town of Trumbull for eight years, and began her municipal career with the City of Bridgeport, where she spent nearly 20 years in "progressively responsible finance and grants leadership roles," according to the news release.
Savo currently serves as President of the Government Finance Officers Association of Connecticut (GFOA-CT) and as a Standing Committee Member of the National GFOA.
"GFOA sets best practices for how municipalities budget, manage, and safeguard taxpayer money," according to the news release. "In these leadership roles, Ms. Savo leads statewide efforts and regularly collaborates on standards for municipal fiscal governance, budgeting best practices, audit preparation, financial reporting, and state statutory compliance."
Savo will begin her role in Hamden in early December, according to officials.
"I am honored to serve as Hamden's Finance Director and appreciate the confidence and support of the Mayor and Legislative Council," Savo said. "I look forward to working collaboratively with the administration, Council, and finance team to complete the outstanding audits, prepare the FY2028 budget, and provide timely, accurate financial information to support informed decision-making. I am excited to be part of Hamden's future."
