HAMDEN, CT — Celebrate the beginning of fall with the Hamden Public Library’s Book Discussion Group as we discuss Claire Keegan’s two international bestselling short novels, "Small Things Like These" and "Foster."
This is a hybrid discussion, meaning participants may attend in-person in Thornton Wilder Hall at the Miller Cultural Complex, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, or via Zoom, on Monday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. This discussion’s facilitation is by Mark Schenker, Senior Associate Dean of Yale College and Dean of Academic Affairs at Yale University.

Shortlisted for the 2022 Man Booker Prize, "Small Things Like These" is a story of the hope, heroism, and bravery of an ordinary man. Immersed in the holidays in 1985 Ireland, coal merchant and family man Bill Furlong is overwhelmed in his work and finds himself pondering the possibilities of what his life could’ve been; until one profound moment of discovery threatens to change everything that Bill thought he knew about his past and community.
In "Foster," a heartfelt story of childhood innocence and understanding, a young Irish girl is sent by her parents to live with her relatives on their farm, unknowing of what the future will hold in store for her. In her new surroundings and in new company, she will experience the healing powers of family connection and learn valuable lessons about love, kindness, and affection along the way.
