Community Event Helps Hamden Cut Thousands In Annual Energy Cost

HAMDEN, CT - From Energize Connecticut: More than 5,000 free ENERGY STAR® LED light bulbs were recently distributed during four special light bulb exchanges in Ansonia, Derby and Hamden sponsored by United Illuminating (UI) through the Energize Connecticut initiative. Residents traded their old incandescent and CFL light bulbs for four 60-watt equivalent ENERGY STAR LEDs which were donated to UI through a partnership with Philips.

The ENERGY STAR LED Bulbs exchanged at these events can last up to 14 times longer and use about 90 percent less energy than an old-fashioned incandescent.

More than 1250 households were represented during these exchanges which occurred at various locations across the three towns. These residents will save an average of $150 or 795 kilowatt-hours (kWh) over the lifetime of each bulb. As a result, the communities combined to save roughly $650,000 in total energy costs, or nearly $55,000 per year.

An individual breakdown of these results is as follows:

• Ansonia and Derby – held two combined events and exchanged 331 bulbs for an estimated annual savings of $14,577 and lifetime savings of $99,717
• Hamden – held two events and exchanged 923 bulbs for an estimated annual savings of $40,381 and lifetime savings of $553,224

Furthermore, attendees had an opportunity to speak directly with an Energize Connecticut representative about the benefits of a Home Energy SolutionsSM energy assessment. Anyone who signed up for this program received four additional bulbs.
