Elderly Man Injured In Attempted Carjacking, Teen Charged: Hamden PD

Police said good Samaritans "scared the suspects away" after the victim was thrown to the ground. A 15-year-old was arrested and 2 got away.

HAMDEN, CT — An elderly man was injured during an attempted carjacking at Alltown Fresh in Hamden on Thursday morning, according to police.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the carjacking, and two other suspects got away, according to Lt. Raymond Quinn.

Police responded around 10:05 a.m. to the area of Alltown Fresh, 1941 Dixwell Ave., on the report of a carjacking-in-progress.

Quinn said three male suspects were reported to have forcefully thrown an elderly victim to the ground in an attempt to steal his vehicle.

One of the suspects then sat in the vehicle and tried to start it, but the keys were with the victim, according to Quinn.

The three suspects ran away from the scene just before officers arrived, according to Quinn.

Quinn said Sgt. Derick Manning was in the area on routine patrol and was the first to arrive on scene.

Members of the public pointed out one of the suspects running on Weybosset Street and he was taken into custody by Manning, according to Quinn.

The two other suspects ran away. They were described as young males, one was wearing all black clothing and the other was wearing a gray sweatshirt and shorts, according to Quinn.

Quinn said multiple officers searched the area for the two suspects, including a K-9 track, but they weren’t found.

The elderly victim sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to Quinn.

The 15-year-old boy was arrested on charges of assault on an elderly person, conspiracy of assault on an elderly person, criminal attempt of robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle, and conspiracy of robbery involving an occupied motor vehicle.
