Family Displaced, Firefighter Hospitalized After Fire In Hamden

All of the residents made it out of the home safely on Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials.

HAMDEN, CT — A family of six was displaced and a firefighter was hospitalized after a fire on Newton Street Thursday afternoon. The firefighter was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment and was expected to be discharged on Thursday night, according to Deputy Fire Chief Gary Merwede.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 23 Newton Street at about 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 19. The fire was located in the rear of the home and firefighters determined that all of the residents had made it out of the home safely. They were found in the next-door neighbor’s yard and all were uninjured, according to Merwede.

The fire was under control by 1:43 and crews remained on the scene to check for extension in interior and exterior walls, according to Merwede. Portions of the basement and one bedroom sustained water, smoke and heat damage.

The family, three adults and three children, received assistance from the American Red Cross after being displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Merwede.
