Fire Destroys Garage, Family Returns Home to Find Firefighters Battling Blaze in Hamden

No injuries were reported, according to fire officials.

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden family returned home to find firefighters battling a heavy fire with flames bursting out of their garage on Monday evening.

Firefighters responded to a Wilson Lane home at about 5:25 p.m. on Jan. 9 on the report of a structure fire with flames showing. The first company on the scene, Engine 2 from Circular Avenue, confirmed a working fire with heavy involvement in the garage area, according to Deputy Chief Gary Merwede.

Firefighters determined that the home was unoccupied and Battalion Chief Gary Couture declared the fire under control at 5:43 p.m.

The homeowners arrived while firefighters were conducting their operations, according to Merwede.

“The main body of fire was confined to the garage, however, the living area sustained heat and smoke damage,” Merwede said in a press release. “Hamden Building Official Robert Labulis worked with the homeowner to secure the electrical service and keep the home heated overnight. With temperatures in the low teens during operations, frozen pipes would have greatly increased the damage in the home.”

The Red Cross was also called to the scene to assist with overnight accommodations for the homeowners.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.

Fire Marshal Brian Dolan is investigating the origin and cause of this fire.
