Fire Destroys Garage, Vehicle At Home In Hamden
Crews extinguished a fire that destroyed a detached garage, engulfed a vehicle in flames and damaged a neighbor's home Sunday in Hamden.
HAMDEN, CT — A fire that started in a trash receptacle destroyed a garage, engulfed a vehicle in flames and damaged a neighbor’s home Sunday in Hamden, according to fire officials. Firefighters responded to a fire at 74 Furman Road within three minutes of dispatch at 4:32 p.m. on March 22, according to Fire Marshal Brian Dolan.
Arriving companies found a detached two-car garage fully engulfed in flames along with a vehicle that was in front of the garage.
“Additionally, the fire had begun spreading to the woodlands behind the home,” Dolan wrote in a news release. “Companies quickly knocked down the fires and did extensive overhaul. The intense flames also resulted in siding damage to a neighboring home from the radiant heat.

“In the course of the investigation it was discovered that the fire originated in a trash receptacle in front of the garage. A smoldering piece of plastic that was believed to be extinguished was placed in the receptacle and ignited other combustibles. A neighbor noticed the flames shortly thereafter and called 911 and alerted the occupants.”
