Fire Extinguished At Former Hamden Middle School Building

Crews responded to the fire on Sunday, according to officials.

HAMDEN, CT — Crews extinguished a fire at the former Hamden Middle School building on Newhall Street on Sunday, according to officials.

Firefighters responded to the building at 550 Newhall St. around 5:15 p.m. on the report of smoke coming from the roof, according to Hamden Fire Marshal Brian Dolan.

Dolan said the first-arriving crews reported smoke pushing out three windows, with visible fire coming from a fourth-story window.

“Crews were able to access the fire from the roof,” Dolan wrote in a news release. “The fire was quickly brought under control within 30 minutes. Crews remained on scene checking the area under the roof deck for any possible extension.”

Dolan said the fire started in a fourth-floor utility room that also had some stored items in it.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Hamden Fire Marshal’s Office.
