Hamden Company Has Answer to Nuisance Animals
Company's product will make sure Bambi doesn't eat your tomatoes.

With the recent harsh winter becoming a memory, most people are now focused on enjoying their backyard landscape and vegetable gardens.
Because of that harsh winter, there are many hungry animals lurking around for food, ready to destroy what residents have spent hours to create.
Home owners and businesses don’t want to spend a small fortune and hard work landscaping, only to find it gone or ruined by outside animals. The alternatives are chemicals, traps and unsightly fences. Until now.

A Hamden business believes it has the answer. Resident Bob Reynolds was practicing law at the time when he decided to look into manufacturing. He is now CEO of Shake-Away at 2330 Whitney Ave., which he runs with his wife Cate.
Shake-Away's concept is based on the concept of keeping animals away from vegetation using the scent of coyote or fox urine. The product can be used year round and is safe to animals and vegetation. The granular product will not take away from the look of the landscape.

Shake-Away is predator –scent repellent -- the only one registered with the federal Environmental Protection Agency -- and is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute.
Shake-Away specializes in keeping Deer away, but is also effective on other animals including rabbits, rats and domestic cats. It can also be used to keep cats from using a child’s sand box or a garden as a litter box.
The Shake- Away method not only keeps the animals away it also trains them not to return to the area, Reynolds said.
The animals used are farm raised and the secret is in their diet, Reynolds said, which has to consist of meat to produce the proper scent. The animals are feed meat from animals collected that were killed on the roads. They are trained to relieve themselves in a certain area where their urine is collected and pasteurized.
Shake-Away can be purchased at Ace Hardware or Agway stores and most garden or hardware stores. Locally it can be purchased at and Vinny’s in Wallingford.
