Hamden Denies Quinnipiac's Bid for Lights at Refurbished Fields
The town's Zoning Board of Appeals ruled against the university's request for variances that would allow for lights on the athletic fields.

Saying there is no proven hardship under the town’s regulations, the Hamden Zoning Board of Appeals denied Quinnipiac’s request for a variance that would allow the university to install lights at its refurbished athletic fields along Mount Carmel Avenue, according to the New Haven Register.
The Register reports that while it denied the request Thursday night, the zoning board did leave open the possibility that flood lighting may be needed to reflect advances in technology to make lighting less intrusive in residential neighborhoods.
Quinnipiac had applied for several variances that would have allowed lighting on the fields above the town’s height regulations, according to the Register.

The Register reports that one of the reasons Quinnipiac applied for the variances was so the fields would comply with the court-ordered Title IX requirement that it provide equal facilities for women’s sports as it does men’s sports. However, the university’s lawyer admitted that the ruling didn’t require that its facilities accommodate night games.
