Hamden High Boys Soccer Defeats Amity

Team record now 2-0.

Hamden High School's boy's soccer team remains undefeated after beating Amity Saturday.

Though it began as a seesaw battle, the synchronicity of Hamden’s summerlong teamwork began to exert its leverage.  Maintaining possession, Hamden’s midfield patiently changed sides time and again, probing for opportunities. Twenty minutes in, Alex Zapata evaded double-teaming Amity defenders to drill the first goal home from 25 yards.

Throughout the first half, Hamden blasted one shot after another – left right, and over the top, keeping the Amity goalkeeper jumping, diving and punting. One punt launched the counterattack resulting in Amity’s Jesse DiPetro scoring off a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1. Amity’s subsequent surge might have turned the tide, had not Hamden’s defensive dexterity deflated the pressure.

Hamden’s possession skills kept the center of activity well onto Amity turf, reinforcing repeated progressive assaults on the Amity goal. The crescendo came with five minutes to play when, less than six feet from the net and assisted by a tsunami of Hamden Dragons, Austin Tomin put away the final goal.

The boys’ varsity record now stands at 2-0. The next game is scheduled for Monday Sept 19 at East Haven.

Junior Varsity
Amity scored the first goal and only within the first few minutes of the game.  Beyond that, it was all green and gold. Hamden’s Ken Okafor tied it up in the first half on a penalty kick to the bottom right corner.

Midway through the second half, Hector Zepeda played a through ball to Alan Braun, who scored with a hard shot to the right from just inside the 18. Hamden continued to outshoot Amity, and 10 minutes later Braun’s cousin Evan Spangenberg  scored the third goal. Sophomore Goalie Matt Wilson played 1st half, relieved partway through the second half by freshman Nick Cappiello.
