New Details Released on Why Hamden High School Was in a Lockdown Thursday: UPDATE

A High School student caused the lockdown, police said, after allegedly raising a fist to a staff member and other behavior.

UPDATE: Police released new details about why Hamden High School went into a lockdown Thursday morning.

Police Capt. Ronald Smith said at 7 a.m. Officer Mark Atwater was approached by the Hamden High School Principal regarding an altercation that had occurred inside of the school. The Principal further advised that the school was on “lockdown” and that the person responsible was somewhere inside of the building, police said in a news release.

Hamden Police spoke with the complainant, an employee at the school. She stated that she was walking in the maintenance hallway, when she heard someone running towards her, police said.

She further stated that the juvenile male “raised his fist” as if to punch her, police said. She related that she hurried her pace to elude the juvenile, police said. The complainant immediately advised co-workers about the incident.

Further investigation revealed that the juvenile, who is a student at Hamden High School, was running in the hallway, “making basketball type moves,” police said. When the complainant turned around, the juvenile was “making believe that he was dunking a basketball,” police said.

Hamden High School students were subsequently transported to the Hamden Middle School during the lockdown. Students have returned to their normal studies, police said.

Hamden Police School Resource Officer Scott Jason conducted the investigation, police said.


UPDATE: Police have taken the suspicious person into custody and the lockdown is now over, WTNH News 8 reports.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden High School students are being diverted to the Middle School due to a report of a suspicious person near the school grounds, WTNH News 8 reports.

The High School is currently in a lockdown, which was necessitated by a report of a suspicious person near the school, News 8 reports. Fox 61 reports that no one is injured and police are investigating.
