Hamden Hockey Coach Bill Verneris Announces Retirement

Verneris, who led the Green Dragons to two state titles, made the announcement following Saturday's season-ending loss.

Hamden hockey coach Bill Verneris announced his retirement following the Green Dragons’ season-ending 10-3 loss to Xavier in the CIAC Division I quarterfinals Saturday, Dan Nowak of GameTimeCT.com/New Haven Register reports.

Verneris, who coached for 14 years and led Hamden to state championships in 2009 and 2010, said after the game that he’s been thinking about stepping down all season, according to Nowak.

“The time is right,” Verneris told Nowak. “Losing 10-3 in my final game isn’t a great way to go out; it wasn’t exactly how I envisioned going out. But it’s been a great ride.”
