Hamden Library Events To Celebrate NEA's 'Big Read'

A book and film discussion will take place in November.

Hamden Public Library is hosting two events in November to celebrate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read in Hamden in cooperation with Eastern Connecticut State University. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.

The first event is a Walk&Talk Book Discussion of the novel "Into the Beautiful North" by Luis Alberto Urrea. This book was chosen for the 2020 NEA Big Read. The book discussion will take place in Town Center Park in Hamden, 2761 Dixwell Ave, near the red barn on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at 11 am. The rain date is Monday, November 9, 2020 at 11 am. Please bring a blanket or a foldable chair. This event is offered free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is required. Register online at www.hamdenlibrary.org (click on programs). The second event is a virtual film discussion on the impact and legacy of the 1960 Western "The Magnificent Seven". This movie plays an influential role in Urrea’s novel “Into the Beautiful North”. The virtual film discussion will take place on Thursday, November 12, from 7 to 8 pm. It will be presented by film expert Michael Wheatley, a staff member of Hamden’s Best Video Film and Cultural Center and the Hamden Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.
