Hamden Mayor: Local Coronavirus Confirmed Cases Nearing 300
Statewide data shows Hamden's caseload to be lower, Mayor Curt Leng says things may be even worse based on number of untested residents.
HAMDEN, CT – The town of Hamden saw its confirmed number of coronavirus cases grow on Monday on a day when the death toll in Connecticut grew to more than 600. While the state department of health listed Hamden with 263 laboratory-tested confirmed cases, Hamden Mayor Curt Balzano Leng posted on one of his social media channels Monday that there are now 298 confirmed cases in the town – an additional 31 from Sunday’s count.
According to the state’s health department data, Hamden trails only New Haven in the region for the most cases. After Monday’s cases were added to the state data bank, New Haven registered 697 cases and 16 deaths. The state reports Hamden to have five registered coronavirus-related deaths.
Statewide, Monday brought a significant jump in confirmed cases as health officials announced that 1,346 additional people had tested positive, bringing the total to 13,381. State health officials announced that the heavy increase was due to the large number of test results that were beginning to come in.

On his social media post Monday, Leng wrote that 'thousands' of additional local residents have coronavirus, but have not been tested. In an email Monday evening, Leng wrote that his post was an estimate based on the local health district’s “clear direction” that many more are among the positive cases of the coronavirus in the Hamden community that “are not and may never be tested.”
Based on data reviewed by Hamden Fire Chief Gary Merwede, the largest number of cases in the town continue to be those involving residents between the age of 51 and 60 followed by residents between the ages of 70-100.
