Hamden Police Investigating Multiple Friday Morning Attacks

At least three men were attacked by a group of people; two New Haven teens arrested.

Hamden police are investigating a string of attacks that took place early Friday morning in which at least three men were approached and beaten by a group of people, according to a police press release.

Police responded to Goodrich Street at about 1 a.m. on a report of a burglary-in-progress. Responding officers first met with a 54-year-old New Haven resident who stated that he was attacked by a group of males.

Officer Peter Conti and Investigator Mark Sheppard arrested two of the fleeing juveniles after a lengthy foot pursuit.

Police said that it appeared that the large group attempted to burglarize a residence on Goodrich Street.

Two New Haven teenagers, ages 13 and 14, were arrested and both were charged with second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit second-degree assault. Both are scheduled to appear in Juvenile Court in New Haven on Nov. 19.

Police said that the victim was walking southbound on Newhall Street, when he was approached by approximately five individuals. The angry group demanded his money and personal belongings. One of the individuals subsequently struck him in the jaw with a handgun. The group then fled as police arrived.

While officers were interviewing the 54 year-old victim, a second victim, described as a 59-year-old Hamden resident, approached them.

According to police, he stated that he was walking southbound on Newhall Street, when approximately eight individuals began chasing him. He subsequently ran to a nearby residence in an attempt to get help.

Police said an individual associated with the group, pointed a firearm at him. The large group then began to beat him with the gun, as well as shovels, sticks and other yard items, according to police. The 59-year-old victim suffered serious facial injuries.

Shortly thereafter, Hamden police responded to Yale-New Haven Hospital to speak to a third victim. The 43-year-old New Haven resident was found “stumbling down Dixwell Avenue near Henry Street.” He advised police that he was walking westbound on Goodrich Street when he was attacked by approximately five individuals.

Police said one of the individuals was in the possession of a handgun. The 43-year-old victim was struck in the face with the firearm. He was then punched and kicked repeatedly while he was lying on the ground, according to police. The group stole $7 and cigarettes from the victim, who suffered facial injuries during the attack. The group fled from the area on bicycles after the attack.

The Hamden Police Department Major Crimes Division is continuing the investigation.
