Hamden Police: Victim was Robbed, Assaulted by Man After Giving Him Money to Buy Beer

One man has been charged and police are continuing to investigate after saying as many as seven other individuals joined in the attack.

A New Haven man has been charged with the assault and robbery of a 56-year-old Milford man who had given him money to buy beer Monday night in Hamden.

The unidentified Milford resident gave Chamar Suggs, 33, $20 to buy beer but when Suggs walked past the liquor store, the victim followed him.

The victim was then attacked by Suggs and approximately seven other individuals, Hamden Police Capt. Ronald Smith said in a press release. The attack occurred in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Goodrich Street around 8 p.m. Monday night.

Smith said the victim was punched and kicked repeatedly and his wallet and cell phone were stolen.

The victim sustained serious facial injuries and was treated at the scene by Hamden Fire Rescue and was then transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical treatment, according to Smith.

Officer Robert O’Neill and Officer Andrew Pfeiffer located Suggs at the intersection of Morse Street and Saint Mary Street. He was arrested after further investigation.

Suggs, of 65 Lilac Street in New Haven, was arrested on charges of second-degree robbery, third-degree assault and second-degree larceny. Suggs was held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on May 8.

Smith said police are continuing to investigate the incident.
