Hamden Student Group Receives Funds On MLK Day

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden’s Students for Educational Justice was recently honored for advancing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideals of a just and equitable society.

The organization will receive $5,000 from Point32Health Foundation to support its mission, according to a news release. The award was announced Jan. 13 at Point32Health’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition and Service Day.

“A youth-led nonprofit organization, Students for Educational Justice works to instill a positive racial identity in students who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), encouraging them to use their power,” officials wrote in the news release. “In 2021, more than 20 students completed the organization’s intensive training focused on building self-pride, growing interpersonal relationships, organizing in the face of oppressive systems, and harnessing community power. Students also were involved in creating the organization’s first mural, now on display at People Get Ready Books in New Haven.”
