Owls open season Sept. 13.

Hamden’s Sarah Vaughan has been named captain of the Southern Connecticut State University women’s cross country team, along with sophomore Grace Gothers (of Wethersfield), for the 2014 season by coach Melissa Stoll.

Vaughan earned All-Conference laurels last fall during the cross country season and was the Owls top finisher at the NCAA Regionals. She was recognized by the USTFCCCA with Cross Country All-Academic Team honors for her work athletically and academically last fall.

During the track and field season, Vaughan was an All-Region honoree in the 10,000 meters and was named to both the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team and the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team. Vaughan was also selected to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Gothers had a strong rookie season for the Owls last year with both the cross country and track and field squads. She was named to the USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic Team for her performance athletically and academically last fall. Gothers was also named to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Last year, the Owls were ranked as high as No. 3 in the region and placed 14th at the NCAA Regionals. The Owls were also recognized by the USTFCCCA with Cross Country Team Academic honors.

The Owls open the 2014 season on Sept. 13 at the Bruce Kirsch Cross Country Cup in Rindge, N.H.
