Kitchen Fire Evacuates Family From Home Overnight In Hamden
The fire was caused by discarded "smoking material," according to officials.
HAMDEN, CT — A family safely evacuated their home after discarded “smoking material” led to a kitchen fire early Tuesday morning in Hamden, according to officials.
Firefighters responded to 37 Laconia St. around 4 a.m. and found a small fire in the kitchen pantry of a 1 1/2-story cape home, according to Deputy Fire Marshal Nelson Hwang.
“The fire was extinguished using a 1 3⁄4 hose line with no extension,” Hwang wrote in a news release. “Fire damage was limited to the pantry with minor water and smoke damage.”

Hwang said the fire started in the food pantry.
A resident told officials that he smelled smoke coming from the kitchen area and alerted the owner and woke the family up to evacuate the home, according to Hwang. The residents safely evacuated the home until firefighters arrived with no injuries reported, Hwang said.

The Fire Marshal’s office determined the fire was caused by a “discarded smoking material” in the trash can, according to Hwang.
