Smith investigation revealed that the 68 year-old homeowner, while lying in bed, observed a light shining into his bedroom. He quickly ran to his living room, where he observed an individual (later identified as Shaw) jumping out of the living room window.

Officer Peter Conti and Officer Andrew Lipford observed the individual responsible, pedaling a bicycle, southbound on Dixwell Avenue. Shaw then dropped his bicycle and subsequently led officers on a foot pursuit. He was apprehended shortly thereafter, in the vicinity of Morse Street and Columbus Street.

Smith said Shaw was in the possession of stolen property that was taken from another Pearl Avenue residence.

Further investigation revealed that Shaw had forcibly entered the second residence through a rear porch window. He stole electronic equipment from the living room, according to Smith. The residents were asleep during the burglary.

Shaw, of 364 Front Avenue, West Haven, was arrested on charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, two counts of sixth-degree larceny and interfering with a police officer.

Shaw, who was detained on a $50,000 bond, is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 17.

Shaw was additionally charged with violation of probation, stemming from an outstanding arrest warrant.
